IEEE TEMS, Victorian Section in conjunction with IEEE Kerala Young Professionals is hosting a webinar on “Professionalism and Duty of Care” by Dr. Mark Howard, Research Fellow & Ethicist at Monash University, Australia.

Abstract:
Foundational to professionalism is the notion of a duty of care, the accepting of moral responsibility for the impact our actions have on the broader community and the environment. However, many professionals have little formal training in ethics, and can struggle to agree on the right thing to do when confronting a moral dilemma. This seminar discusses the idea of “doing ethics”, utilizing conceptual tools to decide what we ought to do (ethically speaking) for non-arbitrary and properly compelling reasons.

Speaker:
Dr. Mark Howard is a Research Fellow with the Philosophy program at Monash University, part of an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science in the research field of Ethics, Policy and Public Engagement. Specializing in political philosophy, applied ethics and social informatics, Mark’s research focuses on the social, political, and ethical impact of emerging technology in transportation, healthcare and agriculture. His teaching includes Human Rights Theory; Ethics of Global Conflict; Digital Futures, and Professional Practice Ethics for Engineers.
